Is Spirituality crap?

Igor here is one I know you will enjoy :)  I am a big believer in Spirituality.  I believe in energy and healing and powers.  I believe people have extra senses that can be used to "see the future."  I believe in all that stuff.  How about you? :)

To cut you off an argument path I agree with you that there are plenty of charlatans out there just to make a buck on gullible people.  That being said, what do you think?

  1. Oh, there we go! You are more likely to agree on musicals than spirituality.
Trigor, do you believe in God? If not, then this conversation is beyond just spirituality. So Trigor, without getting into 72 virgins, do you believe that there is a universal creator and life after death?

  2. There is no God. There is only Allah, the true ruler of the universe. As Prophet Muhammad put it: "belive in Allah, and you bang 72 virgins!" (Quiran, verse 22:10).

Jokes aside, here is a serious response (for a change).

Allen, your post is one of most ignorance, and one that you spent the least amount of thought on. Do you want to hear me say "spirituality is crap"? Well, sorry, not going to say it. I have my own spiritual beliefs, believe it or not. But, the reason why I ridicule your beliefs, is that you tend to take whatever you find out there, and imagine that it is real. Your entire view is a giant mixture of different ideas, views, etc. You find a "Conversation with God" book, and ooooh: I'll take that. Then you encounter kabalah, and off we go changing names. Then you find out that hindus have a tremendous spiritual beliefs, and off we go add that to the mix. It is as if you are chasing something.

How about original ideas? How about taking a concept/belief system and studying it fully? Stop making stuff up by taking bits and pieces of various systems. I am ridiculing you because in the process you suck up the most childish and naiive things (and pay money in the process).

I, personally, don't know what to belive. I think all the time, rather, feel all the time. I know there is more to life than meets the eye. However, I don't know how to explain it, or what to think of it. One thing I will not do is believe someone who tells me that they can communicate with spirits. And pay $300 dollars in the process. :) Ever seen "Ghost"? :)

So to sum up: do I believe in spirituality? Yes. Can I define what I believe in? Can I describe what I believe in? Not yet. I am working on it though.

Mariya, now your turn: do I believe in God. Define God? What is a universal creator? Are you imagining an old man with large white beard? Or do you imagine a dude with 8 arms like hindus do? Or an alien nation? If by God you mean someone (or something) that is responsible for creation of the universe, then yes. Do I believe that there is more to our concience than a simple chemical reactions in our bodies? Yes. Can I explain/define it? Not yet.

I will let u guys know the answers as soon as I get them. Even if takes few lives to collect them all! :)

  3. Igor,

Thanks for your honest answer. I, like you, am a thinking and a feeling person. I do not however just rush into anything, but instead try to understand if it is something worthwhile for me. I do not believe that one system has all the answers thus my personal spiritual belief system does and will always contain bits and pieces out of lots of different systems. I believe that original thought doesn't come from studying one system fully but by realizing how you relate to all. That is the original thought - the ability to see beyound what systems are teaching you and beyound the limitations of any one system.

I am on a constant process of discovery and absorb information by staying open to it. I believe all is real because all is. Any thought is material thus real - but that is a topic we can debate later.

Just like you learn about humanity by reading War and Peace I do by reading Conversations with God. Both are observations on humanity through a filter of the writer. I am sure you don't agree with everything Tolstoy observed just ad I don't agree with everything by Walsch. We have different methods but I believe the objective is the same which is to learn about the world we live in.

I am happy to hear that you don't think Spirituality is crap and I always knew you that was the case. The reason for this post is to have a conversation about Spirituality without you ridiculing me or perhaps so that you understand I don't just change names on a whim.

  4. Good to see the serouse side of Trigor.
I think in maters of spirituality, rediculing anybody for anything makes no sense. One person might quitely wonder about the world and meaning of life, keeping observations to themselves. Others might want to discuss it and try different approaches in search of their own understanding (which might be a conbination of different beliefs). Yes, there might be some people who will make financial gain off of that, but thsi doesn't mean that they have nothing but lies to offer. if they share the sought after information/ideas, perhaps everyone walks away happy. Not everyone is out to get those who are active explorers. Agree, some are. Explorers pay willingly, because it is worth it to them.
As for "original ideas" about spirituality, who says that what's already avalable through religions and spriritual movements is all complete crap? Could it be that each one sees a different side of the same "diamond"? I also like expoling varouse points of view and sometimes alter my opinions because a learned idea suddenly clicks in its place, like a puzzle piece.

  5. Spirituality is not crap, it is a tool for the strong to control the sheep. Call it what you want - God, Allah, Gaea, David LaForce - it allows the few to manipulate the masses. How else could a science fiction writer create a "religion" all his own. In two hundred years, you too will believe that you decended from aliens from another planet. Until then, remember, David is good, David is the light, give all your money to David.

  6. LOL. Good one David. I will have to disagree with you on a few of your points however. Religion has been used to control the masses by telling others only a few know the truth and to follow their rules. The concept of Spirituality (while of course molested by some) is a very personal belief system that says that only you have the truth and you must look inside for all the answers. Religions divide where Spirituality unites. Religions scare where as Spirituality empowers. Religions try to instill their will where as Spirituality teaches Free Will. Thus I would separate the two in your argument. And so from a Spiritual perspective - David is good, David is the light and give all your money to David if you so choose :)

  7. I agree with Allen that religion and spirituality are very different concepts. My religion tells me that I am supposed to show up at "God's house" every Sunday, tell some guy my so called sins, kiss a piece of metal that the rest of the people in the room kissed, eat bread/drink wine and a bunch of other things. Or God won't be happy with me, and it will cost me later. Spirituality allows me to make up my own rules, or rather "feel" and follow my interpretation of the rules. Thefore, I follow only what makes sense to me, and nobody can make me feel guilty but myself (when I know in my heart that I am doing something wrong). Nobody is a high authority, but whoever I choose. For example, I highly respect Delai Lama because his ideas warm my soul. But I don't feel the need to follow him. Only to learn his view and move on. Religion is Faith. Spirituality is Self-Discovery. Masha
